yeah, families should never have to be separated like that.

I agree entirely.
slightly off topic, I know basing a character off of yourself is a bad thing to do, and that's why I don't do it. I do, however, base certain aspects of my characters on myself [because if I didn't, I would have to list all my personality traits and then make sure no character has them].
this relates back to the subject of families because that's where Katara's esteem of families comes in. She too holds them in high regard [though thankfully, I didn't have to get my family ripped apart like she did]
sorry if that was confusing. ~Katara~

well, basing them entirely off of you usually makes bad writing, because then it's usually just that person's fantasies or wahtnot. ~Iroh~

yeah. generally putting yourself in as a character is usually bad, because most of the time the author gives that character extra special attention and makes him/her do all the cool stuff [because they fall in love with them because they are the author] and they usually wind up as Mary Sues/Gary Stus.

oh, but since you do that with all your characters, we don't get that sense that you are paying extra attention to one character.

yeah. usually when one character gets lots of [most of] the attention, the others recieve little or none. ~Iroh~

yeah.
and of course, the author's favorite character is usually different than the readers' favorite characters.
I mean, my favorite character is Katara II because of how complex she is, but she presented herself as actually pretty hateable. ~Katara~
