just something I've been working on...
most of this is also used in mynovel, actually... just a few things changed to get the Avatar-ness out of it, yada yada.
That aside, I've had the urge to post this for a long time.
It's the backstory of the alternate universe Sanaki I created that became her own character.
PROLOGUE: THE RAPE OF A SOUL
"...Behold, I say unto you, wickedness never was happiness."
~Alma 41:10b~
The Zelgius Manor… a huge estate hidden in the safety of a gorgeous area of the Fire Nation—far out enough not to be disturbed by the hustle and bustle of the city, but close enough that the trip into the city was a short one. This walled structure was the home of Razon and Ezera Zelgius. Their wealth, their riches, their power; it all came from their influence and their lethality. They lied, cheated, and murdered their way up the social ladder until they had reached this point. This whole time, no one ever suspected that they would have their own seed to continue their line—no one thought that a child could be born to such malicious nobles. With the Fire Nation in a state of war like it was in, however, there were many corrupted nobles abusing their power.
Nevertheless, the Zelgius couple did not remain childless—in fact, they did not give birth to one child, but two—a pair of beautiful twin girls. After their birth, there was a slight sense of distaste simply for the fact that the girls had not been sons, but even then, both Ezera and Razon had different ideas in mind regarding how these girls would grow up.
“They are small,” Ezera remarked, looking the 2-week-old babies up and down, though she was gently cradling them, “they are small and weak”
Twin babies are naturally slightly smaller than babies born alone, but both Razon and Ezera were not known for their amazing stature, and so because of genetics, these two girls were rather fragile in their younger years.
“That they are,” Razon responded, “but that does not mean we need to condemn them just yet. Their existence is a myth at this point—no one believes that we of all people could have children. For all anyone else knows, this could be a stillborn, or a miscarriage.”
“So we intend to hide these girls like that,” Ezera exclaimed,
“No,” Razon replied, “we name them and raise them…”
“Aye,” Ezera cut him off, “they will continue our line of treachery—perhaps they will seduce their way all the way up to the Fire Nation Palace.”
“Perhaps,” Razon smiled, looking down at his newborn daughters. One of them, the first baby, had a pair of brilliant golden eyes that were darting this way and that, taking in her surroundings. The second baby’s eyes were not moving. She blinked much less than her twin sister, and even less than both of her parents. Her eyes were a glazed shade of gold, and she did not seem to react at all to different levels of light.
“This one though,” Razon remarked, looking at the 2nd baby, “there is something wrong with her eyes—she is blind. You can tell just by the way she moves them.”
“We have no use for her then,” Ezera remarked, “we need to get rid of her.”
Razon took the blind baby from Ezera and looked at her.
“You serve us no purpose if you are blind and therefore helpless,” he said, though it was not likely that the little baby even understood what he said, “We’re going to turn you into a warrior, or kill you in the process.”
The cold truth of these words was that they meant it. They were determined either to work their blind daughter to death, or make her become of some use.
“You are going to have a hard life ahead of you—you will both become legends.”
The Zelgius family was known for their unusual conspiracies and superstitions, and were both considered marginally insane, though not enough that action had to be taken against them. However, this statement of theirs—their intent of turning these baby girls into cold-blooded assassins—was serious. The result of this would be devastating—not physically, and not mentally either. The devastating effect was emotional. This action cost both girls the dearest price they could possibly pay. It cost them their souls—their love, their kindness, their personalities. It was a force that would harden both girls beyond recognition. The younger of these two, the blind one, was clearly not designed to be this way, for there was a little smile on her 2-week-old face. She had no idea what they intended to do with her. Her innocent little soul, still perfect and unmarred at this point, was excited—she seemed happy just to be alive.
This happiness, however, would become encased over time in the hardened shell of a malicious noblewoman who was forced into the position by her parents. They stripped her of all feeling, all emotion, all happiness, and all morals. She was cruelly transformed from an innocent little child into a cold, hostile assassin.
The worst part about this was that it obviously was not overnight. This was a cold, harsh, long, malicious process that would go from the date of Sanaki’s birth to the date that she and her family were separated, whatever the reason may be. Any sane person could have seen the bright and cheerful aura that surrounded both of these babies, especially Sanaki. It was very likely that Razon and Ezera saw it too—they just did not have the hearts to change their minds about what they intended to do. They saw Sanaki as a lump of clay—soft and easily malleable at this point, before it hardened and became what she would permanently be mutated into. Abuse would be her teacher, and pain her method of eliminating her weaknesses. Anger would be her drive, hatred would be her companion, and deception and murder would be her resources. All of these malevolent forces would work together to tear down the bright foundation that Sanaki had been born with—thus exposing the soft, vulnerable emotions of Zelgius Sanaki that dwelt within. They would then encase these emotions forever in a hardened shell of malice, never for it to be seen again. The rape of Sanaki’s natural personality would be long, slow, and painful. Rape—a method of displaying power over another person; a method of defiling and degrading them—such an analogy when compared to the fate of Sanaki’s personality could not be ousted. Sanaki’s parents displaying their power over their daughter’s emotions and personality; their method of defiling and degrading the positive aura that she had been born with—truly, this was a perfect metaphor.
And with no one in the world to give strength to her inner emotions; with her parents forcing her down paths she did not wish to go down; and with her sister existing as her competition instead of her companion, as twin siblings should be, Sanaki’s personality was truly in a doomed state from which there could be no escape.
After all… how do you best fracture someone’s personality? You start when they are young.
