There was always this one question I had about the bending. All but the fire bending seems to manipulate an element that is already present. But fire benders can CREATE the fire and use it. Albeit they summon some sort of source from anger or the sun or whatever, they are still creating the fire and not manipulating it.
I'm not just crazy and missed something that explained it did I?

well... air is everywhere, and earthbenders are like waterbenders only on a much moer "available" scale.
they can't bend things if they're not on the ground, so it's like water.
fire is combustion. it's the only element that can't really "exist" on its own. it's always consuming something. just my thoughts. ~Iroh~

The atmosphere is filled with electricity, protons, neutrons, electrons, etc. These things when put together combust and make sparks or fire. It's an issue of the unseen (microscopic) world.
